How to Use VPN to Access Restricted Content

Restricted Content

Gaining access to geo-restricted content can be quite challenging, particularly when traveling or attempting to view media that is restricted to specific regions. Although VPNs are widely regarded as the most common solution, I find Smart DNS Proxy to be a more straightforward and effective method for accessing content that is not available locally.

Why I Prefer Using Smart DNS Proxy Over a VPN
DNS Proxy
Smart DNS Proxy offers a more straightforward and effective solution by solely redirecting DNS queries rather than routing all traffic through an encrypted tunnel. This enables uninterrupted viewing of high-quality videos online, as my traffic bypasses the additional encryption steps.

Furthermore, it does not conceal my IP address, which helps avoid complications such as security flags on banking websites or bothersome CAPTCHAs. I can enjoy geo-restricted content while maintaining smooth access to various online services. In contrast to VPNs that necessitate software installation and may be incompatible with smart TVs or gaming consoles, Smart DNS Proxy can be configured directly on routers and media players, facilitating access to popular TV streaming services on my chosen device.

Additionally, since it modifies only DNS queries instead of rerouting traffic, it is more challenging for streaming services to identify and block, thereby ensuring more dependable access.

Setting up Smart DNS Proxy is simple and works across multiple devices. I'm using Windows 11, but Smart DNS Proxy has guides for macOS, smart TVs, consoles, and more.

Step 1: Create a SmartDNS Account

To begin, you should establish a Smart DNS Proxy account using your email address. They provide a complimentary two-week trial without requiring credit card information, granting complete access to their services, with the exception of Netflix, which is available only through a paid subscription. Therefore, if your primary viewing is not on Netflix, an immediate subscription is not necessary.

Begin by accessing View Network Connections through the Control Panel by navigating to Network and Internet, then selecting Network Connections. Right-click on the adapter and select Properties, then scroll down to find the options for IPv4 and IPv6.

Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) to ensure that SmartDNS Proxy operates solely with IPv4. Next, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties. Tick the option to Use the following DNS server addresses. Subsequently, refer to SmartDNS's list of available DNS servers,

choose any two servers that you believe will not block the content you wish to access, and copy their IP addresses. Return to your IPv4 configuration panel and paste both IP addresses into the designated field. It is important to note that your device will default to the DNS server specified under Preferred DNS server, utilizing the Alternative DNS server only if the preferred one is unavailable. After configuring the network settings, restart your computer to apply all changes. Additionally, Google Chrome may occasionally block Smart DNS Proxy when attempting to access online content. To prevent this issue, navigate to Settings, then Privacy and security, followed by Security. Scroll down to the Advanced section and disable the Use secure DNS option. This adjustment should resolve any issues with Chrome blocking sites due to the proxy DNS.
